The duration of the whole body application can vary from 8, 16, sometimes up to 24 minutes. Normally, it is sufficient to apply the mat for 8 minutes. In case of acute illnesses, 8 minutes three times daily is recommended. Increasing the duration is not harmful, but may not bring better results except with elderly users or for specific problems. (Refer to the setting recommendations provided in the book by Dr. Joel P. Carmichael, DC DACBSP “Magnetic Resonance Stimulation – Using the Field to Maximize Your Health”). If you are the owner of the iMRS Professional device, you can check the iGUIDE, a built in database of 250 health conditions and pre-programmed settings for the full body mat, pillow and probe. Please note that according to the World Health Organization the body should not be exposed to the MAT for more than one hour during a day.
In his manual for therapists, Dr. med. Rolf-Rainer Krapf explains the duration principles as follows:
“Normally, the duration of application is 8 minutes. The effect of magnetic field treatment decreases no later than after 10 minutes because the body’s mechanisms adapt (reduction of cAMP). The lower the cAMP levels sink, the less a cell will react. A habituation effect results if the cell is overloaded with Ca++ which does not permit a cascade of effects to be triggered again within the next 4 hours. This means that long lasting treatments weaken the effect continuously. For example after only 30 minutes only 10 to 40% of the original effect may be retained. Naturally, an effect is still possible. However, it will not be as strong as at the beginning. This does not apply to the treatment of bones or cartilage. Here the decrease in cAMP has no effect on the bone or cartilage stimulation. In these cases we recommend longer treatment periods and high intensities.
The adaption reactions of a cell usually last for at least 4 to 6 hours. Therefore, another magnetic field therapy session should not be applied until after this period has passed”.
Explaining above in a simpler or different way:
If we apply a magnetic field to the body, ion pumps of the cells become very excited, accelerating their designated function to open and close. Due to this increased activity, messenger substances send out a call for help to the interior of the cell: “Please let us have more ATP (energy)!” For the body this means that after a magnetic field has been applied, more energy is available to all cells. Interestingly, the increased ATP synthesis continues even after the ion pumps have settled down and the MRS treatment has ended. Therefore, another application is not needed for at least 4 to 6 hours thereafter.
We also need to understand that in prolonging the application on the mat up to 24 minutes or longer, ions in the cell may start chasing around in a chaotic fashion. The cell could then become overwhelmed by continued messenger substances calling for help, thus tuning off. It also explains that the very first 8 minutes of treatment application are decisive, continuation assures more or less a status quo, and longer applications do not guaranty more success. In energy medicine the rule, “viel hilft viel” (more helps more) does not apply. This should also be taken into consideration when choosing intensities.
Please remember that above “DURATION” explanation only refers to the MAT. Local applicators have a different wave signal and can be used even up to 30 minutes and longer, also as often as needed. USER’S FEEDBACK: It has been reported repeatedly that elderly people experience more energy by increasing the morning mat application up to 16 minutes. The same has been reported after a bad night sleep, waking up sluggish rather than refreshed. In other words: At the end, it is always the user who knows what feels best because everyone has his or her own individuality which needs to be taken into account.
HINTS AND TIPS CONCERNING THE INTERRUPTION OF MRS DURING VACATION OR LONG-TERM USE:
In principle, this therapy should not be interrupted due to vacation. However, once a patient is stabilized using pulsed magnetic fields, it is o.k. to stop during vacation. This means that one should have used the mat for at least six weeks before interrupting. If there is no other choice, therapy should be resumed afterwards gradually, beginning at lower intensities.
Referring to long term use, the principle applies that consistent treatments are the best. Since there is no such thing as too much magnetic field therapy, long-term use is recommended. Treatments should not be interrupted if used therapeutically. This does not apply to preventative use. In this case, the following rule of thumb could be applied: After six months of intensive treatments, one could pause for several weeks, then resume daily use again.
“8 minutes a day, keeps the doctor away!”
