Oral Health and PEMF

Oral Health and PEMF

This month I am excited to share a guest post from Steven C Olsen DDS.  Dr. Olsen is a leading-edge known Colorado dentist who is providing innovative treatment options for complete adult dental care and is defining the way periodontal disease is treated in the 21st century.  Following his post, I will add the proven benefits of magnetic resonance stimulation in the field of dentistry and oral health.

The Impact of Oral Health on General Health

“Can my mouth make me sick?  Can other health problems affect my mouth? What can I do about it? In the last decade, scientists and researchers have discovered that the mouth and its health, or lack of, weighs heavily on one’s general health.  It’s been discovered that any type of infection, such as periodontal (gum) disease or dental abscesses, can affect many areas of the body and influence our general health.  Periodontal disease influences several major health factors.  It affects about 75% of the adult population in the U.S. and is more common among smokers, obese and diabetics.

Researchers have found that people with periodontal infections are almost twice as likely to suffer coronary artery disease.  Periodontal bacteria can enter the blood stream, invade the blood vessel walls and ultimately cause atherosclerosis (clogging of the arteries). People with diabetes are more prone to developing periodontal infections as well as cavities since they release excess sugar around the necks of the teeth when diabetes is not well controlled. People with chronic lung conditions like chronic bronchitis, emphysema or pulmonary fibrosis can develop aspiration pneumonia and other associated problems from inhaling periodontal infection bacteria.

Taking good care of your mouth – teeth and gums – does more than help ensure you have a bright smile.  Good oral hygiene and oral health can improve your health, reducing the risk of serious disease and perhaps even preserving your memory in your golden years”

How PEMF can assist a Healthy Mouth-Body Connection:

Referring to above periodontal information, a healthy body and healthy mouth go hand in hand. Several testimonials provided in this website have shown surprising results in the reversal of periodontitis. Magnetic resonance stimulation (MRS) offers many health benefits, including the mouth-body connection. MRS has proven beneficial in stimulating cellular metabolism, blood circulation, tissue regeneration and immune system response. A boosted immune system not only helps the body’s general defense system, it includes oral health as well. Details are covered in a translated article “From the Desk of German MDs” by Dr. Marie-Catherine Karkowski – Oral Orthopedics.

Incorporating magnetic resonance stimulation in the field of dentistry is not uncommon in Germany, taking advantage of the local applicator probe.  In the US, dentists and other oral specialists may still require a convincing introduction, including thorough PEMF knowledge and its health benefits, preventative and/or therapeutically.

MRS is recommended to apply immediately after orthodontic surgery, accelerating lymphatic drainage and to avoid postsurgical problems like pain and swelling. Next to jaw or oral surgery, MRS is used after wisdom tooth extraction. German dentists also document the benefit of MRS during tooth implantation.  Not only will it prevent possible infections, but most importantly, it will heal and strengthen the bone much quicker, and therefore shorten the implantation period.

Summarizing the effect of MRS on dental and maxillary medicine:

Relieving pain, promoting circulation, relaxing masticatory (chewing) muscles, reducing swelling, strengthening the gingival and the suspension of the teeth, preventing degradation of the jawbone, more rapid closure of gingival pockets, more rapid wound closure before and after a dental extraction.  Supportive in nonspecific tooth and jaw ache, in chronic sinusitis, for treatment of focal infections and periodontitis. The rate of infection can be kept low. MRS provides rapid assistance in capsulitis on the jaw, in particular with compression. MRS helps calming the patient before any procedure, resulting in less needed anesthetic because of reduced anxiety.
